Discover the Incredible New Te Ara Mangawhero Trail in Ohakune
Experience the absolute best of Mount Ruapehu’s pristine alpine environment on Te Ara Mangawhero, the spectacular new walking and mountain biking addition to the famous Mountains to Sea – Ngā Ara Tūhono Great Ride. Developed in deep collaboration with local iwi Ngāti Rangi, this beautiful eco-tourism trail snakes through ancient native ngahere (forest), traversing majestic wetlands, historic volcanic features, and breathtaking views of the mountain peak. Phase One delivers a phenomenal Grade 2 (easy/intermediate) 12.9km loop track that seamlessly links up with the legendary Ohakune Old Coach Road.
What makes Te Ara Mangawhero so special for outdoor enthusiasts is its smart, purpose-built off-road design. For the very first time, walkers, trail runners, and cyclists can safely ascend and descend the southern flanks of the mountain without having to compete with vehicle traffic on the main Ohakune Mountain Road. As you explore the gentle, flowing track, you'll cross beautiful new suspension bridges and follow the footprint of the historic 20th-century Bennett and Punch bush logging tramway, where old iron spikes and mossy tramway sleepers still dot the forest floor.
