Mountain Biking

Discover Ohakune By Bike —experience lush forests, historic viaducts, and volcanic vistas on trails rich in history and natural beauty.

Mountain biking in Ohakune offers a unique blend of stunning natural beauty and rich cultural history, making it a must-ride destination for enthusiasts of all levels. The Old Coach Road trail winds through lush native forest and over beautifully restored heritage features like the Taounui and Hâpuawhenua viaducts, remnants of the erly 1900s rail era. For a newer adventure, the Te Ara Mangawhero trail, opened in 2024, traces historic logging tramlines through beautifully regenerating sub-alpine native forest complete with sweeping views of Mount Ruapehu, celebrating local ecology and Ngâti Rangi heritage.

These trails are part of the greater Mountains to Sea - Ngâ Ara Tūhono cycleway, which links the high volcanic slopes of the Central Plateau to the Whanganui coast. Together they showcase Ohakune's breathtaking scenery and offer a deep connection to the stories of Aotearoa's past, making each ride as culturally enriching as it is exhilarating.
